In his address to the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) convention, Cuauhtemoc Cardenas accepted the nomination by his party to be the PRD party’s presidential candidate. The election would be held on August 21, 1994. Mr. Cardenas would run against candidates from the two other major parties: the ruling party, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), and the National Action Party (PAN). A masked figure known as Super Barrio (SB), the symbol of the Mexican social-urban network of neighborhoods (Asamblea de Barrios), was present in the crowd to display that organization’s support of Cardenas.
