The House Financial Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations held a hearing to examine the trends that impact affordability and availability in the U.S. housing market. Witnesses familiar with the housing industry testified on the practice of large corporate investors outbidding low-and-middle-income Americans for houses, who then rent out the houses to tenants. The witnesses also spoke about these landlords' allegedly predatory behavior, including large rent increases, high eviction rates, and disproportionately adverse affects on Black and Hispanic communities. Finally, witnesses recommended incentives for homeowners selling to first-time home-buyers, more transparency regarding corporate landlords, and other measures. close
