Retired Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer said that Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization--the case that struck down Roe v. Wade and federal abortion rights--specifically applied to abortion and had “very little to do with marriage ... and contraception, and gay rights, and so forth.” He was asked about the case during an interview cosponsored by the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy and Harvard Law School, which was one of his first public talks since retiring in June 2022. The former justice also argued against the legal theory known as originalism, said he supported term limits for justices, and disagreed with the idea that the Court had become overly political, although he acknowledged ideological differences. Former Justice Breyer served on the Court for 28 years and accepted a law professor position at Harvard. close
