Rep. Jim Langevin (D-RI), the first quadriplegic member of Congress, testified at a House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Aviation hearing on air travel accessibility for disabled passengers. He described barriers he often encounters while flying, such as damaged assistive devices and wheelchairs, denied boarding, and delayed assistance. Rep. Langevin, who was retiring from Congress at the end of his term, urged Congress to pass the Air Carrier Access Amendments Act of 2021. The second panel comprised disability advocates and airline industry executives. Advocates spoke about the difficulties disabled passengers face while flying, such as damage to wheelchairs and injuries while boarding, and recommended solutions, including passage of the Air Carrier Access Amendments Act of 2021. Executives answered questions on improving various features of air travel for the disabled, including inaccessible restrooms, small airplane seats, and inconsistent security screenings. close
