House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) held a bill enrollment ceremony for the Respect for Marriage Act, bipartisan legislation to protect same-sex and interracial marriages. Former Representative Barney Frank (D-MA), who in 1987 was the first member of Congress to voluntarily come out as gay, also spoke briefly. In his remarks, he praised Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), the first LGBTQ person elected to Congress, for her leadership efforts in passage of the measure. close
