South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP, concerning congressional redistricting and racial gerrymandering. The case centers on South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District (CD1). According to the 2020 Census, the district is underpopulated while its neighboring 6th Congressional District (CD6) is overpopulated. To even things up, the Republican-controlled legislature moved more than 50,000 people from CD6 to CD1, and 140,000 people from CD1 to CD6. The legislature argued that the movements kept CD1 a Republican-safe district while also maintaining Black voter percentages. The South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP filed suit, alleging that the movements resulted in splitting up thousands of Black voters and diluting their voting power.
