The Supreme Court heard oral argument in a case concerning the bankruptcy of Purdue Pharma and its potential impact on opioid victims' compensation. Purdue Pharma, once owned by the Sackler family, made the highly addictive painkiller OxyContin. As addictions rapidly spread, victims filed lawsuits. The suits and damage claims numbered in the trillions of dollars. In 2019, the Sackler family gave up control of Purdue Pharma. The company filed for bankruptcy. A reorganization plan deal struck included a trust for victims' compensation with the Sackler family contributing $6 billion. In return, the family would be released from all opioid-related claims, and future litigation. The U.S. Trustee that oversees bankruptcy cases opposed the deal and filed this appeal. The Supreme Court’s ruling could impact existing bankruptcy cases involving mass tort claims like the Boy Scouts of America that was facing abuse allegations. close
