At the beginning of each new Supreme Court term, audio of the opinions from the prior term are given to the National Archives and made available to the public. One of the most consequential cases of the 2022 term involved the court’s 6-3 ruling to end affirmative action in higher education. On June 29, 2023, the Supreme Court struck down race-conscious college admissions programs at Harvard and the University of North Carolina, citing violation of the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause. Chief Justice John Roberts delivered the majority opinion and Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote the Court’s dissenting view. In a rare occurrence, Justice Clarence Thomas spoke from the bench with his concurring opinion. close
