Iowa Condition of the State Address

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) delivered her 2024 Condition of the State address from the Capitol building in Des Moines. She began her speech by addressing the Perry High School mass shooting that occurred five days before, in which a sixth grader and the school’s principal died along with the shooter himself. The governor then discussed her accomplishments, such as increasing workforce training, banning abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, and passing “one of the boldest school choice programs in the country.” She also proposed various policies, such as reducing the income-tax rate to a flat 3.65%, increasing teachers' starting pay to $50,000, and expanding postpartum care for new mothers making less than $42,000 per year. close
