Federal Bureau of Prisons Director Colette Peters and Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on the rise of non-medical related deaths in the federal prison system. Several topics were touched upon, including the need for policy reform related to the use of solitary confinement and restrictive housing, mental health and substance abuse treatments, and concerns over illegal contraband, including drugs, cell phones and weapons. They also addressed the need for more funding and resources to address the prison system’s aging infrastructure and the challenges related to the recruitment and retention of prison staff. close
