The commanders of U.S. Strategic Command and U.S. Space Command testified on nuclear deterrence and space security before the Senate Armed Services Committee. The hearing focused on the need to modernize nuclear and space capabilities amid threats that Russia, China, and other nations pose in these areas. U.S. Strategic Command Commander Gen. Anthony Cotton said China was surpassing the U.S. in its number of fixed intercontinental ballistic missile launchers, and U.S. Space Command Commander Gen. Stephen Whiting said China and Russia have “transformed space into a contested warfighting domain.” Though both generals urged for modernization, they also affirmed the strength of their respective commands' capabilities. close
