“Maine people do not welcome crisis or disaster. But we will always rise to meet them … And it is because of Maine people - because of their unyielding resilience and resolve in the hardest of times - that the state of our state is strong,” said Governor Janet Mills (D-ME) during her State of the State address before a joint session of the legislature in Augusta. Unlike years past, the governor’s remarks focused on the disasters and tragedies that impacted the state in 2023 and the early part of 2024. She spoke about the storms that devastated towns and businesses across the state and highlighted the efforts of community members to rebuild from the damage. Governor Mills also addressed the mass shooting in Lewiston that resulted in the deaths of 18 people, and she laid out her plan to address crime and gun violence in the state. close
