The Associated Press Managing Editor’s Association annual convention sponsored a panel discussion entitled “Censoring Student Publications.” The panel held their event in a debate style between David Hawpe, editor of the Louisville Courier-Journal, and Principal Robert Reynolds of Hazelwood East High School in St Louis, MO. The students of Mr. Reynold’s high school protested his actions in removing 2 articles from the school’s paper. The students filed a lawsuit objecting to the removal which would eventually be heard by the Supreme Court as Hazelwood v Kuhlmeier. The Court found by 5-3 decision that articles could be removed from the newspaper as it did not serve as a public forum but rather existed as part of classroom curriculum. close
