The Senate continued debate on S. 240, the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act, which would curb securities fraud lawsuits and weaken the Securities and Exchange Commission’s ability to seek financial settlements on behalf of investors. The bill would make it harder for investors to file lawsuits against brokers if stocks performed below expectations. Among the amendments considered was one from Senator Paul Sarbanes (D-MD) that would increase rule making powers of the Securities and Exchange Commission. close
