Current news events and political issues were examined through reviews of the morning newspapers; interviews with journalists, newsmakers and legislators; and viewer telephone calls, faxes and electronic mail. In the first segment, James Toedtman, Newsday-Washington Bureau Chief, talked about current headlines, including U.S. secret arms shipments to Bosnian forces via Iran and other stories. In the next segment, Senator John Ashcroft, R-Missouri, and Senator Paul Simon, D-Illinois, talked about current issues in Congress, including President Clinton’s laughing after one of Secretary Brown’s memorial services. In the next segment, Phil Kuntz, Wall Street Journal, and by phone, Chuck Neubauer, Chicago Sun-Times Investigative Reporter discussed former Democratic Representative from Illinois Dan Rostenkowski’s plea agreement in which he pled guilty to two counts of mail fraud and the general issue of congressional ethics.
