Federal Reserve Chairman Greenspan, who chaired a 1983 commission on Social Security reform, spoke about the future of this and other entitlement programs. Money markets had fallen after some remarks he had made on stock prices a few days earlier. He examined numerous economic statistics relating to future benefits and the status of the programs. He also outlined how the eventual deficits in these programs could be avoided through various policy alternatives. close
