Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala and Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin released the annual report on the current and future fiscal health of the Medicare and Social Security trust funds. They stressed that the Medicare fund part A will become insolvent in 2001, but that this must be dealt with but not in panicked manner. They also noted that both programs need to be changed to deal with long-term demographic shifts in the population. close
