Senate Judiciary Committee members heard testimony from FBI Director Louis Freeh concerning FBI operations, procedures and budget. He answered questions regarding an FBI van which was recently stolen in Memphis, TN, and carried weapons and ammunition. Director Freeh also answered questions pertaining to recent allegations of misconduct in the FBI crime lab and specifically the altering of reports and misleading testimony in several cases. He also declined to say if he would ask the attorney general to appoint a special counsel to investigate possible violations of campaign finance laws by the Democratic party and denied that he withheld national security information from the president regarding alleged Chinese attempts to influence the 1996 elections. close
