House Republicans, including Majority Leader Rep. Dick Armey, R-Texas, held a news conference to publicly ask the president to sign the supplemental appropriations bill for disaster relief and military operations. They stressed that the president’s promise to veto the legislation because it has an amendment which would prevent government shutdowns is contradictory to all his statements during the government shutdown in late 1995. They also stressed the importance of this amendment to the public and federal employees. close
