Yu Shuning, spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., briefed reporters on the transfer of Hong Kong from British to Chinese control. He stressed that Hong Kong would become a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China and retain a significant amount of autonomy. He also answered reporters' questions about the implications of the transfer, especially for Hong Kong citizens. The transfer officially occurred on July 1, 1997. close
