Issues in the upcoming Court term are previewed. A case from Yonkers, NY questions the authority of courts to legislate. Because the city of Yonkers did not comply with desegregation standards, a local judge ordered legislation and fined the city and council members when the legislation did not pass. Footage shows interviews with an attorney in the case and the mayor of Yonkers. Another case, Missouri v. Jenkins, also involves desegregation. A local judge ordered a tax increase for a school district to pay its share of improvements. At issue is how much power resides in the local court. Other discussion topics include: sobriety checkpoints invading privacy rights; political discrimination in hiring practices; restrictions on abortion; streamlining the appeals process of courts; and cameras in the courtroom. close
