Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, M.D. gives an address to the City Club of Portland, OR. Then Rep. Ron Wyden introduces Dr. Koop with a positive look at his 8 year tenure. Koop opens with a joke about himself when he was reported on in the San Francisco press, “Looks like Lincoln, Sounds like Moses.” Koop’s speech covered many issues including AIDS, Expectations and realities of healthcare healthcare costs and how they will be paid. He supports a laissez faire economy but is against self regulation of services. Changes are needed to the current system but does not propose government controled universal care. Questions from the audience ranged from Public Health and the administration needing to take a stronger stance on AIDS and Drugs to abortion(when does life begin) and cigarettes. close
