Governor George W. Bush (R-TX) and Vice President Al Gore met at Wake Forest University for the second of three presidential debates prior to the 2000 presidential election. They sat at a table with moderator Jim Lehrer and were given two minutes to respond to questions in addition to rebuttal time. At times, both candidates stretched the rules by posing questions to one another in their responses. The first part of the debate focused on foreign policy, including recent violence in the Middle East and Yugoslavian elections. They then turned to civil rights issues and economic policy.
