The Europe and the Middle East Subcommittee and the Human Rights and International Organizations Subcommittee held a joint hearing to take testimony from administration officials, human rights groups and scholars. Several hearings have been held over the last 2 years to examine political and human rights in the Middle East. Of particular interest in this hearing are recent developments in the West Bank and Gaza and the uprising now in its 28th month, violence in the territories, a review of some Israeli methods of punishment including deportation, U.S. policy towards the West Bank and Gaza, a review of the economic situation, implications of Soviet-Jewish immigration, and the status of school and university closures. close
