Senator Tsongas, who did not seek a further Senate term in 1984 after he undertook treatments for cancer in 1985, grew up and worked as an attorney in Lowell. In his remarks, Senator Tsongas said his candidacy would “sow the seeds of America’s economic renaissance,” and he declared the necessity of the reaffirmation of traditional American values to recapture the place of the U.S. as the world’s greatest economic power. He called the increasing Federal debt “generationally immoral,” and pledged to make improvements in the environment, education, and the situations of women, minorities and veterans in the United States.
