Two war veterans described the experiences detailed in their memoirs. Joseph Quitman Johnson enlisted in the U.S. army in 1941 at the age of 14. While serving in the Philippines, he was captured by the Japanese and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner and slave laborer. Mr. Johnson was forced to walk in the “Bataan Death March” where thousands of U.S. soldiers died. Chuck Gross was a 19-year-old helicopter pilot who flew over 1,200 combat hours in Vietnam. He described how dangerous it was to fly in combat in Vietnam. close
