West Virginia state representatives and environmental experts testified on the safety of drinking water following a January 2014 chemical leak that left several thousand West Virginia residents without access to clean drinking water. Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) in his testimony said he was “angry, upset, shocked and embarrassed” by the response to the chemical spill and added that his state has always been “soft on regulation.” The witnesses talked about the anxieties and fears of many residents regarding the safety of the water. They told committee members more information should be made available about the kinds of chemicals involved in the spill, and that their state needs better regulation to ensure a chemical spill never happens again. close
