Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Margaret Hamburg participated in this event to announce
the FDA’s proposed changes to nutrition fact labels on packaged foods. The labels were mandated by the 1990 Nutrition Labeling and Education Act and went into effect in May 1994.

First lady Michelle Obama marked the fourth anniversary of her “Let’s Move!” initiative with an announcement of new nutrition labeling proposals to help parents and other consumers make healthier choices. Some of the changes included listing added sugar separately and for prepackaged foods usually eaten in one sitting listing calories for the whole container instead of the serving size.
