Committee members heard testimony from Charlene Barshefsky, the acting trade representative, President Clinton’s nominee for the permanent position. She testified about a wide variety of trade issues, including trade deficits with Japan and China and the acceptance of Chile into NAFTA. She stressed that China will have to be more open to U.S. goods before it receives U.S. support for its membership in the World Trade Organization. close
