Lieutenant General Kelly and Admiral McConnell spoke to reporters following a briefing of the president on events in the Persian Gulf. The previous evening, Iraq had fired SCUD missiles at Israel but U.S. supplied Patriot missiles had destroyed the SCUDs before they reached their Israeli targets. Lt. Gen. Kelly said that the operation was proceeding acceptably at 45.5 hours into the mission. He said the armed forces had destroyed a substantial number of SCUD missile launchers, and they would continue to be a prime military target. Admiral McConnell said the Iraqi air defense systems had not been as advanced as originally estimated by U.S. intelligence reports. He also said Saddam Hussein was probably in control of his troops despite the disruption of communication equipment in Iraq. close
