Members questioned the prime minister on the continuing spread of foot-and-mouth disease in livestock. On March 20 the government enlisted the help of the army to coordinate the disposal of diseased animals and outlined an aid package for the tourism industry. Opposition leader William Hague suggested the general election widely expected for May 3 be postponed until the disease is under control. close
