Author Paul Hoffman talked about his book, Wings of Madness: Alberto Santos-Dumont and the Invention of Flight, published by Hyperion. In the book, Mr. Hoffman described the history of flight before the Wright brothers, and explored the line between genius and madness. Mr. Santos-Dumont, born in Brazil in 1873, made the first powered flight in Europe by reshaping a hydrogen balloon into an oblong form, and attaching two internal combustion engines to the basket. Following prepared remarks, Mr. Hoffman responded to questions from the audience. close
