Brookings Institution scholars talked about a report they are releasing today, “Restoring Fiscal Sanity: How to Balance the Budget.” The book analyzes the federal budget deficit and suggests ways to balance the budget. Doctors Sawhill and Rivlin presented an overview of the book, after which a panel of former government officials discussed the pros and cons of a deficit budget. After their presentations the participants answered audience members' questions. 

The second panel, Brookings Scholars who contributed chapters to the book, talked about solutions for balancing the budget, including the “small government” concept. After their presentations they answered audience members' questions. Dr. Rivlin joined them for questions also. 

Mr. Porter is a former U.S. Representative from Illinois. Dr. Rivlin is the former director of the White House Office of Management and Budget. close
