The committee heard testimony on the state of the nation’s economy in mid-1991. Earlier in the month, the committee heard testimony from Michael Boskin, the U.S. chief economic adviser, stating the economy was on its way to a recovery from the recession. The witnesses in the July 26 hearing, private economic forecasters were more reserved about whether economic indicators showed the U.S. was exiting the recession. A report by the Commerce Department released the same day said the nation’s GNP grew .4 percent in the second quarter of 1991 and inflation rose only .2 of one percent in June 1991. close
