Panelists talked about the challenges of philanthropy for rural areas, where the poorest people live and there is the least philanthropic involvement. Topics included the episodic nature of crisis-inspired philanthropy, the need to serve the total community, and the lack of support organization. Areas discussed included education and health care. Working models included building partnerships, using the Internet to create involvement, and mobilizing retirees. The panelists also responded to questions from members of the audience. Jonathan Alter moderated.

“New Directions in Philanthropy - Reaching Rural and Other Underserved Areas” was a program of the Slate 60 Conference on Innovative Philanthropy, which was co-sponsored by Slate Magazine, The William J. Clinton Foundation and the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service and held at the Clinton Presidential Library. close
