Pope Benedict XVI addressed Roman Catholic bishops from the U.S. in the crypt of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Several Eastern Orthodox dignitaries also attended the address. His remarks focused on the history of religious practice and diversity in America, the secularization of American culture, and standards of morality. Most of his remarks and questions submitted from the bishops focused on recent sexual scandals involving Catholic priests and the impact of the scandals on the church.

His remarks followed and evening vespers service which was not aired. As the pope left the event bishops sang “Happy Birthday” to honor his 81st birthday. close
