Representative Steve Chabot (R-OH) talked about efforts by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to formally apply for United Nations membership before the U.N. Security Council, and he responded to telephone calls and electronic communications. Representative Chabot, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia, has introduced a non-binding resolution calling for the withholding of U.S. funding for the U.N. if the General Assembly recognizes a Palestinian state. He also favors a cutoff of $500 million in annual U.S. aid to the Palestinian Authority if the Palestinians pursue their membership bid.
