Civil rights leaders and contemporary movement leaders spoke on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, the same spot where the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his “I have a dream” speech, for the “Let Freedom Ring” ceremony to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the August 28, 1963, March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Speakers included former Presidents Carter and Clinton, daughters of Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, members of the King family, and leaders from national and international organizations. President Obama paid tribute to all those who struggled for equality and said that economic justice was the “great unfinished business” of the march. The bell from the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham that was bombed in 1963, killing four little girls, was rung in synchronization with bells worldwide. The ceremony included numerous musical performances, including the Bahamian Junkanoo, a Maori haka from Destiny Church, and the national anthem by Identity4Pop. close
