Douglas Elmendorf testified at a House Budget Committee hearing on the Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) annual report on the long-term budget outlook. CBO Director Elmendorf said the report reveals that the nation’s deficit levels were unsustainable. In addition, the nation’s debt was 74 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). He said changes were needed to sustain health programs such as Medicare or taxes would need to be increased to keep the programs. close
