Afghan Vice President Sarwar Danish addressed members at the U.N. General Assembly. His remarks focused on the progress made by his government and he stressed that democracy was the key to solving the “legacy of problems” the country inherited. Mr. Danish emphasized the need to combat terrorism and radicalization and maintained that Afghanistan was willing to negotiate but needed the support of the U.N. since it is at the “forefront” in fighting terrorism. He also touched on the progress of the Iran nuclear deal, the threat of North Korea’s nuclear program, and the state of Afghan relations with Pakistan. He also urged the U.N. to consider Afghanistan for its United Nations Human Rights Council during the 2018-2019 term. close
