House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Ranking Member Peter DeFazio (D-OR) delivered remarks on U.S. infrastructure and its funding challenges to members of the Association of American Highway and Transportation Officials. He talked extensively about the challenges to increasing funding for road, bridge, and transit projects, specifically political resistance to raising the federal gas tax. Representative DeFazio said it was crucial that his fellow lawmakers resist the urge to use a temporary funding fix for transportation funding, and instead establish a sustainable user fee to pay for future maintenance. close
