Scholars and experts on the Chinese government talked about likely policy shifts that were expected from the 19th Communist Party of China Congress, which was slated to begin October 18, 2017. Much of the discussion centered upon the direction the Chinese government was likely to take in its foreign policy, particularly regarding its nearby neighbors who disputed some of its expanding territorial claims in the South China Sea. Panelists also talked about mainland China’s evolving relationship with the semi-independent Taiwan, as well as the future of cross-straits relations. Following the discussion, panelists took questions from the audience. close
