President Clinton cut his Hawaiian vacation a day short and flew to Des Moines, Iowa to examine the damage resulting from the floods in Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri. He took a helicopter tour of the Des Moines damage and spoke with Senators Harkin and Grassley about the damage. The president also shook the hands of numerous National Guard troops and persons who lost their homes. He also took questions from reporters concerning federal funding for disaster relief. He assured the flood victims that Congress will move quickly to provide emergency aid to those who need it. close
