President Clinton, joined by Jim and Sarah Brady and a number of congressional leaders, signed the long-debated Brady Bill. The Brady Bill creates a five-day waiting period for a background check on persons attempting to buy a gun. The Bradys have worked for seven years to gather congressional support for handgun regulations and restrictions following the 1981 assassination attempt of President Reagan. In the attempt, the president’s Press Secretary Jim Brady was seriously wounded. Following statements by the vice president, attorney general, Ms. Brady, Ms. Musick, and Mr. Brady, President Clinton spoke about the need for fire arms restrictions and the importance of the Brady Bill. Following the president’s statement, he signed the bill. C-SPAN cameras caught the president and members of Congress celebrating following the legislation signing ceremony. close
