Several members of the Republican majority asked Mr. Chopra about concerns of privacy and expenses relating to Section 1071 of the Dodd-Frank Act, which requires financial institutions to report certain data on credit applications for small businesses owned by women and minorities. Other topics included the CFPB’s work on combating junk fees and predatory lending, and a proposed rule to subject large nonbank companies that offer financial services, such as Apple and Google, to the same regulatory oversight as banks. At the time of this event, the Supreme Court was considering a case about the CFPB’s funding structure; it is an independent agency within the Federal Reserve and not funded by Congress.
