President Bill Clinton and Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa addressed the media following their meeting at the White House. The President and Prime Minister discussed their “shared interest” in the Asian Pacific and its stability, including developments in Russia, China, and elsewhere, and agreed to continue their “close cooperation” in pursuing a non-nuclear Korean Peninsula. The President indicated that the United States and Japan embraced a common agenda for cooperation on global issues such as population, transportation technology, and the environment. It includes a $12-billion joint initiative to address population and AIDS in developing nations and new environmental assistance to Central and Eastern Europe. The rest of the discussions focused chiefly on economics and the framework agreement. Media questions centered on these topics and on the situations in Bosnia and North Korea. close
