Vice President Al Gore and Attorney General Janet Reno briefed the media on the federal anti-violent crime enforcement initiative. The initiative forms partnerships with local and state authorities, sharing with them federal investigative and enforcement techniques to help attack violent gangs and narcotics trafficking. The Vice President indicated that the initiative did not require new legislation and is being financed with this year’s funds. Media questions focused on the “three strikes and you’re out” provision in the Crime Bill, the shooting of a group of Hasidic Jews in New York, and the Ames espionage investigation. close
