Joined by several airline executives, President Clinton and Vice President Gore announced an industry initiative to equip aircraft with fire detection and suppression equipment in the cargo hold. The FAA is currently preparing mandatory rules to that effect. The Valujet crash in the Florida Everglades was probably due to a fire which began in the cargo hold. The president and vice president also took a few questions from the press. close
