Activist Sylvia Mendez spoke at a business meeting of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights about her experiences at the center of the 1947 federal court case Mendez v. Westminster School District, which challenged racial segregation in Orange County, California, schools. Her parents brought a class-action lawsuit on her behalf against four Los Angeles area school districts. The case went all the way to the Nine Circuit Court of Appeals and lead to the desegregation of schools in California. close
