President Bill Clinton spoke about his support for increasing student loan education funding and criticized Republicans for being “short-sighted and pound foolish” for advocating cuts in the program. In 1993, the administration initiated the first direct lending program to college students. The House had proposed limiting this program to forty percent of all student loans. close
